Victoria BC and area enjoys a great mixture of
artists. Often the creative talent is very unique, very west coast
and to many people, it is the first time seeing such beautiful
artwork on display. "Artist Alley" is an opportunity for visitors to Victoria to see some of the
work that local artists are creating. It is taking a piece of
the west coast home with you by supporting these artists.
All of it is on display in an open-air market located
in downtown Victoria. Basically, the artist booths start at the
large stone stairs off of Wharf Street on the waterfront. The
booths work there way up towards Government
Street and more shops and art galleries. The small cobble
stone alley-way covers 2 blocks of artisan booths and carts shaded
by the sun with umbrellas under the blue skies.
The artists come from all over the southern Vancouver
Island and the Gulf
Islands. It is a great opportunity to browse outdoors and
experience west coast art. Some of the items on hand, on any given
day, could include stone jewelry, hemp clothes, wooden and stone
carvings, organic foods, authors and books, paintings, drawings
and west coast wooden furniture.
Many attractions in downtown Victoria, B.C. are
within walking distance from each other. Depending on your level
of interest, it could take days to experience it all. For instance,
the retail shops on Government Street connects to "Artist
Alley" . Then there is the waterfront views and the activity
of the Inner Harbour, where many
hours can be lost to people watching and gazing out at the marine
traffic. The Inner Harbour is just down the street along with the Royal BC Museum and
the BC Government Legislative Buildings. |
