Esquimalt is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on three sides. Much of the coastline is home to the Esquimalt Naval Base and Esquimalt Graving Docks. Esquimalt has always been a naval base - ever since the 1800s when it was a naval strategic staging area for the British Royal Fleet.
Esquimalt has grown from a naval base to a community of parks, marinas, beaches and a growing marine industry. The Esquimalt Graving Dock is the largest ship building and freighter repair depot on the west coast of Canada.
Esquimalt is a village built on new and old, past and present. There are sections of the city with new buildings and store fronts... and there are sections of the community built around older homes transformed into businesses.
Businesses in the region important to travelers include accommodations, marina, grocery store, pub, golf course, bank, antique shops, marina, laundromat, gas stations and restaurants.
The West Bay Walkway is a popular pathway connecting Victoria and Esquimalt. The walkway provides views of the Pacific Ocean and plenty of marine activity. Lining the pathway are sightseeing benches and information signs. |
