The community of Esquimalt, British Columbia, Canada is part of the Capital Regional District of Victoria (CRD).
Esquimalt, B.C. is located west of the City of Victoria. It is a small waterfront naval community surrounded by the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Esquimalt Harbour.
Esquimalt is best known as the home base for the Pacific fleet of the Royal Canadian Navy.
The naval base first began operations as far back as 1842. Esquimalt has always been a naval base - ever since the 1800s when it was a naval strategic staging area for the British Royal Fleet.
Since the 1880s, Esquimalt has grown from a naval base to a community complete with parks, marinas, beaches and a growing marine industry.
The Esquimalt Graving Dock is an important employer in the region. The Graving Dock is the largest ship building and freighter repair depot on the west coast of Canada.
Esquimalt is a community built around the history of the region. There are sections of the community built around new architecture... and there are sections of the community built around older homes - some have been converted to store fronts while others continue to be homes.
Services in the community important to travelers include accommodations, entertainment, grocery stores, pubs, golf course, internet, banks, antique shops, marina, laundromats, gas stations and restaurants.
The Township of Esquimalt is easily accessed via the Johnson Street Bridge located near the downtown core of the City of Victoria next to the Inner Harbour.
Other road routes leading into the community of Esquimalt, BC include Bay Street, Tillicum Road, Admirals Road and the Craigflower Road exit off of the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy #1) near Thetis Lake.
